What About Now

Fooled Again -- Tired and Sluggish
Before all of the Bon Jovi fan club members jump on me (of which I'm a member), let me categorically state that I am a HUGE Bon Jovi fan...as a guitar player, Richie is one of my music idols -- ditto Jon for his song-writing. In my opinion, they will go down as one of the best song-writing partnerships of all time. Furthermore, as a guitar player, I play pretty much every song in their catalog.

BUT....I hate to be honest...

This is one of the worst albums they've come out with -- up there with THIS LEFT FEELS RIGHT, and BOUNCE...i was going to even through 7800 Fahrenheit in the mix because it is such a dark album -- but, at least a case could be made that 7800 was obviously a heavy metal / hard rock album.

Except for "What About Now" and "That's What the Water Made Me", the rest of the songs on this new album are pretty bland and easily forgotten. (By the way, am I the only one who thinks the opening drum solo to "That's what the Water Made Me" is...

Take your time, take it slow!
2013. 30 years of career, more than 100 million records sold, hundreds of prizes and countless live shows played - Bon Jovi are truly one of the greatest bands around the world. Time to take a rest? Not so if your name is Bon Jovi. With "What about Now" the boys from Jersey want to proof the world once again that they still do not think about retiring or taking it slow, but going on stage again and rock that world. In order to do so, they bring along twelve (if you exclude the bonus tracks) new songs, full of political criticism and stories of people that struggle in those hard times. But Bon Jovi would not be Bon Jovi if the overall message of the songs wouldn't be optimistic. No matter how hard the times are, stand up again, take that fight and go on! Why? Because We Can!
But can they still rock? Honestly, I have to say that I was never so torn apart with any of their records. Nevertheless I will try to write down why:

BECAUSE WE CAN (7/10):

I heard the...

Because you have to reserve the 5th one...
I think that people are being overly critical of this album. Is it Slippery When Wet? No, but it's every bit an album that deserves to take it's place on the catalog. Personally I enjoy the more thoughtful side of the new songs. When I was in my 20's and partying to SWW I wanted that album, now I've aged, and matured and I don't mind a glass of wine instead of beer from a keg sometimes. Give it a listen, it's good, quality stuff!

WWE: WrestleMania VI

The Ultimate Challenge
A couple of notes here in that this is the exact same version of this event taken from the WrestleMania Anthology set meaning that all references to "WWF" & various music has been changed to due the rights expiring but there is no blurring of the WWF logo since this event happened before the "Attitude Era."

This was the first ever international WrestleMania as it was held in the SkyDome from Toronto, Ontario, Canada that also set an attendance record for that arena at over 67.000. Various celebrities in attendance include Steve Allen, Rona Barrett, and Robert Goulet signing "Oh Canada" while the story is widely known now that future WWE superstar & Hall Of Fame member Edge was in attendance.

"The Ultimate Challenge" was what defined this WrestleMania as it was a main event under circumstances that we've never seen before & have never seen since as both the WWE & Intercontinental Championships were on the line as the two biggest & most popular superstars in WWE...

The Most Anticipated Match Until That Point
Usually, the main event of any major wrestling event was "babyface" (good guy) vs. "heel" (bad guy). Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant would be a big example of such a main event. With Wrestlemania VI, however, two incredibly popular wrestlers at the time in Hogan & the Ultimate Warrior put their respective belts on the line in a main event that split the crowd in half in terms of cheering support. Good guy vs good guy!

Of course, an event is not made by its main event alone, and this is a great wrestling card that earns its 5-star rating. I won't go into detail on every match here, but here are some of the highlights:

-Mr. Perfect continuing his great brand of wrestling against Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake.
-The Hart Foundation taking on The Bolsheviks with some hilarious pre-match comedy featuring Steve Allen.
-An interesting semi-heel turn from newly-branded "Macho King" Randy Savage by pairing up with Sensational Sherri instead of the traditional...

Mulan / Mulan II

Looks better, but some bonuses dropped from the old DVD
While Mulan looks better on Blu-ray, we are sacrificing some bonus material that was on the old DVD:

All galleries are lost in the leap from DVD to Blu-ray. There were ten Character Design galleries holding several hundred images, three Visual Development galleries amassing around 100 images, a 13-image Backgrounds & Layouts gallery, and a Publicity Art gallery holding 32 images. The interactive edutaining feature "DisneyPedia: Mulan's World", comprised of ten shorts on the film's elements and culture, is another notable casualty. Also gone: the no longer applicable introduction about being able to toggle angles for the production stages demonstration. Included on Mulan's first DVD (a non-anamorphic Limited Issue disc repackaged as a Gold Classic Collection edition) but subsequently dropped and still not resurfacing is its original theatrical trailer. That's a bummer both for fans of Randy Edelman's Dragonheart score and for those who appreciated the use of some rough...

Five stars for the original, three stars for the sequel
Mulan (1998)

Disney Blu-ray & DVD (March 12, 2013)
Directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook
The Voices of Ming Na Wen, B. D. Wong, Eddie Murphy, George Takei, June Foray, Miguel Ferrer,
Harvey Fierstein, Jerry Tondo, Gedde Watanabe
Music by Matthew Wilder
Lyrics by David Zippel
Music Score by Jerry Goldsmith

Mulan is significant in that it was the first feature produced almost completely by Walt Disney Animation Florida, a top-flight studio that doubled as a Theme Park attraction. Guests could wander along picture windows and watch animators at work on real shorts and features. It was a wonderful thing to see while it lasted.

Mulan was also my daughter's first movie. Even though she was just a baby then, she has seen it many times since and it is one of her all-time favorites. This is a great dad and daughter movie, in any case.

The strength of Mulan is that its a story that makes a strong...

Who she is inside
Based upon traditional Chinese folklore (try this take on it for a solid introduction by a noted reteller Fa Mulan: The Story of a Woman Warrior), these two movies tell the story of Fa Mulan (Ming-Na Wen), a young girl living in China in the 3rd Century BC. In the first of the two movies we learn that, as the only child of a considerable landowner, Fa Zhou (Soon-Tek Oh), who was lamed in war some years earlier, Mulan has, somewhat of necessity, grown up something of a tomboy, dressing in trousers, working in the fields, and riding her horse Khan astride; but she's found over the years that she enjoys this kind of life--the prospect of "meeting our Matchmaker (Miriam Margolyes)" terrifies her, and the process of getting "primped and polished" so that "boys will gladly go to war for [her]" seems rather stupid. But in her culture, women are at best second-class citizens, and "a girl can bring her family/Great...

Kiss the Girls / Along Came a Spider

good movies
I think Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors around at this time and I have yet to see him in a movie I didn't enjoy. The plots are good with twists.

Films with Morgan Freeman
This is a good collection of films with Morgan Freeman as Dr. Alex Cross. Along Came a Spider is the better of the
two. The second film, Kiss the Girls benefits from Ashley Judd's performance. Overall, this is a very good purchase
and for a small cost. Besides, Morgan Freeman brings a rare and wonderful quality to the films he does, making
them very entertaining and enjoyable to see.

I love it.
Excellent, I loved it. I had been familiar with the character for years, but had never seen any of the written novels transformed to movies. I was so impressed with my first exposure that I went out and bought DVD's on every story available.

Grease (1978) / Grease 2 (1982)

We Go Together 2 DVD-Pack (Grease/Grease 2 )
I already have the United Kingdom DVD's of Grease and Grease 2 but when I saw them as a two-pack I thought I must get them as Grease is a different version than the UK one.

Grease is one of my favourite musical films ever which was released in 1978. I love Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and the love story storyline and of course the fantastic soundtrack including Summer Nights, You're The One That I Want, Sandy and Greased Lightnin'. It brings back so many fantastic memories of my childhood as I was only [...]at the time.

Grease 2 was released in 1982 and all though it is not up to the standard of the Grease storyline it is a great movie in it's own right and didn't get the recognition it deserved. Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer and Adrian Zmed star in this very funny love story. It has a great soundtrack with songs such as Reproduction and We'll Be Together.

If you like musical films then Grease and Grease 2 are the ones you should have in...

A must have collection
If you are looking for an upbeat video with great music this is the video for you. This is a never get tired no matter how many times you watch it video. Definitely a repeater to watch and ...The more you watch...beware...because you will eventually sing along with these classic movie musicals. Never boring, funny and entertaining. I have been watching this collection for years with my kids, who are grown up now...and we're still watching the collection. It's always like the first time no matter how many times we see it. Highly recommended.

It's OK
The first GREASE is always wonderful but I wouldn't pay to see the second one. But it is a Two-Pack and, as far as movie collections go, I think it's good to have both.

The Green Mile / Forrest Gump [Blu-ray]

Great comnbo pack!
You know the stories, Tom Hanks is great! Add that it now packeged in a one disc combo pac enough said!

Great double feature, but missing extras on Forrest Gump
This is a great budget release if you just want The Green Mile and Forrest Gump on Blu-ray minus a few extras. The individual "Sapphire Series" Blu-ray release of Forrest Gump is a two-disc set; this collection only comes with Disc 1 (which includes the movie, two commentary tracks and a featurette or two). The Green Mile, on the other hand, is exactly the same as the stand-alone release. Both feature great A/V presentations and, of course, a handful of solid extras. But if you're looking for the "total package" Forrest Gump release, you'll have to buy it separately.

These movies were very inspirational. They had a great story line.
The acting in both movies was sensational. Tom Hanks did a great job. I love to run so i really enjoyed Forrest Gump.

Willow (Blu-ray / DVD Combo)

Do you think you'll like "Willow"? I'm sure you will!
What do you get when you have George Lucas AND Ron Howard, both famous for their work in the movie-making industry, producing and directing this movie? You've got it, a fantastic, rollicking fantasy-adventure!

The evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh) has for years been searching for the baby who, according to an ancient prophecy, will end her reign of terror. Taking all the pregnant women, she searches each and every baby when one day, the sacred girl is born. But before Bavmorda could kill her, a faithful midwife takes the child away from the castle. When she realizes she is being pursued, she lets the baby drift away on a river. The abandoned girl is found by a Nelwyn named Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis). But Willow quickly finds out that the baby is being tracked down Bavmorda's armies, including her daughter Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) and General Kael (Pat Roach). Willow sets out to the crossroads to give the baby back to the Daikini, or the big humans. He finds out though through the...

Willow
A great story about a Nelwyn named Willow (Warwick Davis) who finds a baby in the river. It turns out that this baby, named Elora Dannan, is part of a profecy that was said to destroy the evil Queen Bavmorda when the child grew older. Willow sets out on an adventure with a warrior named Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) to save the baby from being killed by the queen. Fairies, trolls, dragons and sorcerers magic bring this story to life by the talents of Industrial Light and Magic. My favorite scene is when all these fairies are flying around in the woods and the head fairy Shalindria gives Willow her wand and tells him to protect the baby and how important his quest is to the whole kingdom. The brownies are very funny too. One of them is played by Kevin Pollack. I highly recommend this movie for people that really like fantasy and adventure.

Pure, nonsensical satisfaction!
"Willow" is a mixed bag of different movie venues and audience reactions, ranging from originality to predictability, from exciting to downright weird. It lacks the ingenuity and spirit of such child-oriented movies as "The Neverending Story" and "The Goonies," but for the most part, it pays off, and you may be surprised to find yourself enjoying different sections of the film.

The beginning is wonderful, a highly suspenseful opening in which an evil queen brings all pregnant mothers in her kingdom before her in hopes of locating and destroying the one chosen to bring her reign of terror to an end. A midwife smuggles the child out of the castle, and before she is set upon by wildebeests, she sends the child floating down the river, where it comes to the attention of the Nelywn community.

In the world of "Willow," there are two sets of people: the Nelwyns, a community of short, midget people, and the Daikinis, regular-sized humans. The baby...

MOSTLY AUTUMN ROCK THE NETHERLANDS
"Every time we play at the Boerderij it feels like coming home..."

"Live at the Boerderij" captures MA at a favourite Netherlands venue on their 2012 Ghost Moon Orchestra Tour , their first DVD since Heather Findlay moved on and Liv Sparnenn took on lead vocals. As usual MA playing live fully match if not exceed their studio sound, the camera work and follow -up editing all do a great job capturing the spirit of the occasion. Sound quality also worked fine for me throughout (though there are no Audio or other "Settings" Options offered)

Each DVD captures one live set, before and after the bar-break. One quirk: 3 "bonus "tracks on DVD 1 , clearly part of the same gig yet not part of either Set??? - "bonus" just seems to mean they are not on the 2 CD set on sale separately . FULL SET LIST BELOW.

Since "GMO", Floyd-Gilmour comparisons seem to have given way to remarked passing resemblances to the likes of Within Temptation and -more so -...

Love the music but........
The music is grand, but this DVD does not play on my DVD player. It does, however, play on my computer.

I have never had this problem before and I do not know if there is something about the DVD that was not indicated when I decided to buy it. Oh well.

Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness

The Power Of Tradition: An Impressive Documentary About The Man Who Brought Us Teyve
Although I am not Jewish, I have a healthy respect and appreciation for the world of theater that is all-encompassing. I grew up with "Fiddler on the Roof" being one of my favorite musicals, and I can't tell you how many interpretations of it that I have seen through the years. Truthfully, though, the writer whose stories inspired Teyve and his cohorts, Sholem Aleichem, was not a household name for me until recently. Last year, the Archive of American Television released two classic Yiddish dramas from David Susskind's Play of the Week anthology with one of them being "The World of Sholom Aleichem." This DVD featured three shorts (one of them not even by Alacheim) that started my fascination with the man and his invaluable cultural and artistic contributions. So when I saw the documentary feature by Jake Dorman, "Sholem Aleichem: Laughing In The Darkness," it helped to round out a more fully developed picture of his place in theater history.

With a wealth of archival...

Who we are and Where we came from.
An important document for those of us with Eastern European heritage---and even more important for our children and grandchildren. Much of this was withheld by our parents and grandparents who came from Russia, Poland and Lithuania in their disdain of the "greenhorn" they felt they were, and their commitment to make a new life in the new land.

A treasure of a film
Excellent use of vintage film clips and photographs. The documentary clearly shows the life and times of Sholem Aleichem in well-edited detail.

New Evidence of Early Man Suppressed: The Dark Side of Archeology 2 DVD Set

Forbidden archaeology
"New Evidence of Early Man Suppressed" is a UFOTV documentary about the controversies surrounding Hueyatlaco, an archaeological site in Valsequillo, Mexico. The site is prominently featured in Michael Cremo's books "Forbidden Archaeology" and "Forbidden Archaeology's Impact". Cremo is a supporter of the Hare Krishna who claims that evidence for the immense antiquity of man has been ignored or suppressed by the scientific establishment. Hueyatlaco is also mentioned in the notorious documentary "Mysterious Origins of Man", narrated by Charlton Heston. "New Evidence of Early Man Suppressed" is marketed as a kind of sequel to "Mysterious Origins of Man".

In 1962, Cynthia Irwin-Williams excavated the Mexican site and found evidence of early human habitation. Her work was soon mired in controversies. Jealous Mexican colleagues accused Irwin-Williams of "incompetence", sent armed guards to threaten her workers, and finally confiscated all the Stone Age artefacts found by the...

More Evidence...
If you are interested in finding truths the film is very worth watching. The evidence for the ancient dating found in the Mexico dig is extremely strong from all perspectives. Actually, it stands like a wall against the priesthood of archaeology and their continued religion, their BELIEF in the established dating worldwide. You can change an idea, but not a belief--so goes the Church of Archaeology in Egypt and the Americas. The film gives excellent explanations of the oldest to the newest dating techniques in the field. The dig information was as crystal as the dig was impeccably and scientifically chaste. The priesthood stills stand against the evidence--A&M University's Archaeology Department up front today. Most intriguing is the fact that all hard evidence found by the female led team of archaeologists/workers mysteriously disappeared 40-yrs ago and a shroud of secrecy has been pulled over the entire find since by unknown and clearly powerful individuals. Who or WHAT is being...

WWE: WrestleMania I

The One That Started It All
A couple of notes here in that this is the exact same version of this event taken from the WrestleMania Anthology set meaning that all references to "WWF" & various music has been changed to due the rights expiring but there is no blurring of the WWF logo since this event happened before the "Attitude Era."

"The Greatest Wrestling Event Of All Time" is what this was advertised to be as this was the event that started it all from New York City's Madison Square Garden where the idea of combining the sport of wrestling together with the celebrities & media presence of the entertainment industry to create the era that is now known as "Rock N' Wrestling Connection." Celebrities include Billy Martin & Liberace & The New York City Rockettes.

The main event match was WWE Champion Hulk Hogan teaming with Hollywood superstar Mr. T with "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka in their corner against "Rowdy" Roddy Piper & "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff with "Cowboy" Bob Orton in their corner...

Hasn't Found The Right Formula Yet
Though no one can say that the first Wrestlemania wasn't a landmark event in professional wrestling history, this event (for a number of reasons) just doesn't pass muster compared to other events that would come later.

First of all, the presentation is not befitting of an epic event. The announcing team of Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura is rock-solid, but the transitions between matches and camera work leaves much to be desired. Instead of the truly magnificent feel of later shows, "Wrestlemania I" is a bit dark and sparse.

In terms of the matches themselves, they really don't start to get going until the last half hour or so. Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd in a Slam Match is kind of fun, as is the women's match featuring Cyndi Lauper. The finale (Rowdy Piper and Paul Orndorf vs. Hulk Hogan and Mr. T) is full of energy, if not a bit anti-climactic.

Overall, it is clear from viewing this in hindsight that the WWF was still searching for the...

Love Wrestlemania!

Casting Couch

Mockumentary
In tribute to Argo (2012) a group of unemployeed guys who have a little bit of show biz contact set out to make a fake movie so they can meet hot girls. Shot as a documentary they talk to the camera. Swearing throughout and some toplessness we watch as each guy gets to screen test their dream gal and think they might be able to hook up with them. The girls, meanwhile, are eager to advance their careers.

At times funny, a suprising number of actors to shoot such a little movie. Entertaining, engaging.

Not to shabby
It's not that terrible. I thought for a low budget movie they did all right. I wasn't a fan of the lead actor in his role but the supporting cast had some good lines and played there roles well.

American Lie
This movie is a bit of a misrepresentation. It advertises unrated T&A and gives you PG-13 content. The women are gorgeous but mostly clothed and the men are not very funny. Cattle Call with Chelsea Handler is a better movie about this exact same unoriginal idea and Argo is a much better film about a fake movie to spend an hour and a half on. Pass on this one said Tim Tebow.

A couple of notes here in that this is the exact same version of this event taken from the WrestleMania Anthology set meaning that all references to "WWF" & various music has been changed to due the rights expiring but there is no blurring of the WWF logo since this event happened before the "Attitude Era."

I'll go on record saying this is the most controversial WrestleMania of all time that had a "Superstars & Stripes Forever" theme complete with the Mania logo in red & white & blue colors with American flags hung around the arena but originally set to take place in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum only to be moved to the L.A. Sports Arena as WWE decided to do an angle playing off the current Gulf War that turned off & offended viewers to the point where they claim the move was due to death threats made towards the company while the other story was that it was moved due to lack of ticket sales due of the storyline. Various celebrities involved include Regis Philbin, Alex...

A Transitional Event Featuring Much New Talent
More than any other period to this point in Wrestlemania history, it seems as if the entire WWF roster changed from VI to VII. Yet, it is pretty much a change for the better, as older, less relevant wrestlers take a back seat to a whole new generation.

The highlights of this event for me include:

-The British Bulldog (always a fan-favorite) in a singles match with The Warlord.
-The Hart Foundation (now solidly in the babyface camp) taking on the new Nasty Boys tag team.
-The first WM appearance for The Undertaker (with Paul Bearer, of course!)
-The epic "retirement match" between "Macho King" Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. Probably the best overall match of the entire event in terms of both execution and excitement.
-Mr. Perfect, one of the greatest technical wrestlers the WWF had ever seen, against the Big Boss Man, who could execute moves very well for a big guy and had a great persona to boot.
-Even the Virgil/DiBiase feud was...

Missing the most important piece of the card!
I really enjoyed the card and I felt it was appropriate given the time the event actually took place. They did a really good job of putting a patriotic feel on things but the most important part of the card (or at least the main event between Sgt. Slaughter and Hulk Hogan) wasn't even included on the disc. The buildup to the match was shown and there was even an interview with Sgt. Slaughter promoting the match. How can you put all the hype on a DVD but not deliver with the payoff? I'm not sure who actually made the call to not show the Iraq vs. America main event but this card and even the design of the Wrestlemania logo with the stars and stripes were all centered around it so I'm not sure how they would justify (or the sense behind) leaving it out. If you still plan to order, I will say that the match between Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior is a great piece of history. I also enjoyed the Hart Foundation vs. the Nasty Boys and it was a trip down memory lane to see The "Texas...

Rating the product here, not the event. I popped it in and watched it for a little while, but the DVD is still blurred. If you have the Wrestlemania DVD sets, I would pass on this one.

I remember as a child watching this ppv with my family. It was my first Wrestlemania I ever got to see. "The Attitude Era" Has Arrived
A couple of notes here in that this is the exact same version of this event taken from the WrestleMania Anthology set meaning that all references to "WWF" & various music has been changed to due the rights expiring & there is blurring of the WWF logo since this event happened during the "Attitude Era."

WrestleMania makes it's way to the FleetCenter in Boston and was a direct reflection of the direction WWE was headed in during that time as this event was stamped "dX-Rated" as many of the superstars, matches, and celebrities had a range of "attitude" & controversy surrounding them from the appearance of Gennifer Flowers to an alternative rock version of "America The Beautiful" by the DX band. Disclosure / Fatal Attraction [Blu-ray]

Two good Movies By Michael Douglas
Blue Ray with two good movies in it and for the price, you can's beat that!!. I had seen these movies before already. Michael Douglas does a good job in both, but especially playing the victim as a person accused of "sexual harassment" by his new boss, Demi Moore whom is also good at her roll. Good suspense movie and good story when you almost never hear the man is the one being sexually harass at the job, you always hear it when is a woman. As to Fatal Attraction, well, Glen Close co-starring in this one with Michael, playing the obsessed woman that she became after what he thought would be a one night fling for the both of them, turned into a nightmare! especially when he thought, that's what she had agreed it would be. Glen Close, really gets into her role in this one and she is really good at playing the "villain" here, although in her mind she believes to be the victim. This one could almost be called a classic!. I recommend them both. They both had good scripts and good...

Michael Douglas and the Sexual Mishaps of the American Male
Back in the late 1980's and early 1990's, Michael Douglas' name was synonymous with sexual catastrophe; no other American male actor has ever suffered the kinds of erotic trauma onscreen as he did during the period from 1987 to 1994. During those years, his entire existence was threatened by an obsessive one night stand ("Fatal Attraction"), he became involved with a narcissistic bisexual murder suspect ("Basic Instinct"), and he was sexually harassed by a former lover who became his boss ("Disclosure"). No wonder Douglas' name on a marquee made a lot of men squirm uncomfortably during that period!

Now two of those films have been packaged together in a two disc blu-ray double feature. The best of the pair is undoubtedly "Fatal Attraction", which struck a major nerve in American culture at the time of its release. In an Oscar-nominated performance, Glenn Close plays a sexually aggressive woman who actively pursues married man Douglas. She's in control of the seduction,...

Michael Douglas fan.
I have liked Michael Douglas as an actor since The Streets of San Francisco, so if he is in a movie that has a
good plot I'll buy it. Romancing the Stone, Wall Street, The Star Chamber to name a few.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut [Blu-ray]

Science fiction at its finest
Blade Runner is one of my favourite films of all time. I re-watch every few months and it's a great watch every time I see it. I love everything about it. The story is interesting and the cast fill their roles superbly. Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in particular stand out. The only downbeat for me on this front was Leon, but that wasn't a big deal.

The world itself looks great on blu-ray and is still a visual treat. The future world feels authentic and the details pull you in, the opening shot of the city is simply wonderful. All through the film there are little details that add style and interest. It also blends high tech future, with grim reality that is still full of life.

The film's soundtrack is amazing, it suits the film perfectly, it's worth picking up for that alone.

I think it's safe to say that I love this film and if you haven't seen it yet then you owe it to yourself to do so.

Rugrats the Movie / Rugrats Go Wild

Hang on to your diapies babies, we're going in!
Ah, Rugrats. What's not to like about growing up with the lovable characters known as Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil? Growing up in the 90s I'd constantly come home after school and watch Rugrats. Obviously when the first movie came out I went to go see it in theaters. It brings back the nostalgia of my childhood and because I have nephews who are now around the same age I was when the first movie came out - it's all good humor and fun to be able to share my childhood with them.

For those of you who are new or can't remember what happens in the first movie, Tommy received a new baby brother. There's quickly trouble in paradise between all the babies once they bring Dil (Tommy's brother) home. Needless to say they all go on this whirlwind adventure and through it you learn things like friendship, caring, and something called the 'Lizard' though I won't go too far into detail.

The First Time

Touching and Realistic Exploration of First Time Love and Sex
***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

Teen romantic comedies seem to be a dime a dozen. It doesn't seem like too many fresh stories come along anymore that aren't filled with the typical clichés. But, sometimes when you are least expecting it, and you are resisting giving another teen comedy a chance, one surprises you.

The First Time is a little gem of a film that is intelligently written and directed by Jon Kasdan. He provides us with an intriguing story with smart, every-day characters that we like. The story is about two teens who arbitrarily meet at teen drunk-fest. However, rather than being inside with all of the other kids, Dave (Dylan O'Brien) is outside in an alley practicing how he is going to share his longtime feelings with his friend Jane, who is basically worshiped by boys everywhere. Through the door comes Aubrey (Britt Robertson) who obviously isn't into the party scene but was dragged there by her friends. Suddenly, these two kids strike up a...

Dylan fans will love this
The First Time is an amazing film and is a must see for all Dylan O'Brien fans.
I saw it in theaters on it's release date in New York at AMC and wasn't disappointed at all.
Britt and Dyl are both extraordinary actors and it's a great representation of a typical high school weekend which was what Jon Kasdan, the director, was going for.

Saw this movie at Sundance last year & it is wonderful.
I saw this movie with my 16 year old son at Sundance last year and it is great. Funny and right on about teenagers and the confusion that sets in with your first love. The acting is very good.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame / The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (3-Disc Special Edition) (Blu-ray / DVD)

Disney's Best - a Miracle of a Movie!
A risky wedding of wholesome classic animation, to adult and often dark-themed material. The risk paid off and the result is one of the greatest achievements of Disney Studios.

The animation here is first rate and the entire thing is shot like a live-action film with some incredible long shots, great theatrical panning and even at one point, during Quasimodo's song "Out There" a realistic camera flare (I did a double take the first time I saw it!) Hunchback is filled with all sorts of great "tricks" like this. Lighting effects here are nothing short of magnificent - often subtle they sometimes change in an instant dramatically altering the mood of the piece. Frodo's demonic song "Hellfire" is perhaps one the most sinister and frightening moments to emerge from Disney and the animators let loose.

The prologue to the movie alone is a minor masterpiece and, like Beauty and the Beast, marvelously prepares us for the whirlwind of a story to take place...

Purists Beware: Liberal Use of Poetic License Here
It would not be hard to contemplate a more difficult story line for Disney to adapt on screen than Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but that doesn't mean it was a walk in the park either. Not only is there the conundrum of how to make Quasimodo true to his character and at the same time not so unsightly in appearance as to frighten off youngsters, but how will Victor Hugo's dark commentary of 15th Century Parisian life, capital punishment and religious bigotry be accommodated? What of Claude Frollo's lascivious desires for Esmerelda and wanton acts upon Quasimodo and gypsies? And that ending...a bit of a downer don't you think? Well, believe it or not, Disney stays true to each of these facets of the novel...with the exception of the tragic conclusion, of course.

Talking gargoyles aside, the film really does not do enough to accommodate young viewers (and perhaps it was a mistake to market this as a kid's movie, but you got to sell those Burger...

A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!!!!!!!
5 stars and 1000 words aren't enough to tell you how great this movie is! "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is truly Disney's greatest triumph. It has everything: the most spetacular animation, the strongest characters, the most complex story, and the best music. Okay, so it may not be appropriate for little kids, big deal. When was the last time you heard a Disney employee say they were making a movie for little kids, anyway? Think about it.

Just the movie's animation is enough of a reason to give it five stars. Almost everything, from the statues around the cathedral, to the city errupting in flames, to a sunset seen from Notre Dame's roof, to the church's interior, is absolutly astonishing. It invites you to just jump into the screen and visit 15th century Paris, and the trip is a stunning feast for the eyes. I can't believe it's all on paper and/or computer screen.

Living in this world are some of Disney's strongest characters (did I mention that already?)...

WWE: WrestleMania XV

Restores WWF Logo, But Edited for Violence
Unlike the other 14 DVDs released along with it, the new Wrestlemania XV is not the same DVD from the 2005 Wrestlemania Anthology, though it does have the same menu style and likewise lacks disc art or extras. The WWF logo is not blurred, Tori has her original theme, "WWF" is spoken and there are no dubbed Howard Finkel announcements. However, it has been edited for violent content. Total running time for the 2005 release of WM XV is 2:46:23, but the total running time for this 2013 release of WM XV is 2:39:03. Notably, the video package and entire postmatch segment were edited from Boss Man/Undertaker, and they also spots where Boss Man choked Taker and Austin choked The Rock.

Differences that I found (time based on more complete 2005 timecode):
16:09: 2013 restores a 5 second shot of Holly walking away with the belt cut from 2005

18:23: 2013 extends the bickering of Test and D'Lo when 2005 dissolves to a shot of the audience. 2013 cuts to the...

Acceptable, But Barely
This particular dvd of Wrestlemania XV is an improvement in comparison to XIV. While I am very appreciative of the WWE finally restoring all the logos instead of the blurring that occurred in ALL past Wrestlemania Anthology releases. Like the other reviewer stated, one of the things I found the most annoying was the editing of certain segments from the event such as my most vivid memory of this event, the hanging of the Big Bossman from the top of the Hell in the Cell. I was like, "what in the world happened to the hanging" and the very mention of it was removed while they cut directly to the lame Rage Party. While other than the editing of the Bossman/Undertaker match, most of the slight editing is barely noticeable.

If the WWE is going to re-release dvds of its past events, they really need to leave them be or place a label and/or disclaimer that the event has been edited for content.

The Ragin' Climax
A couple of notes here in that all of the previous Mania releases were direct copies taken from the WrestleMania Anthology released back in 2005 when WWE lost the rights to their initials "W.W.F." & the "Attitude Era" logo but this disc isn't from that set as all the references to WWF & the logo are restored here but there are some edits throughout the presentation such as competitors choking each other, different camera angles in different spots, and the infamous scene at the end of the Hell In A Cell match removed so this presentation is no different than when a movie is edited down for television.

The hardcore city of Philadelphia hosted the 15th edition of WrestleMania in what was nicknamed "The Ragin' Climax". Celebrities involved with the show included Chuck Wepner, Kevin Rooney, Vinny Pazienza, and Boyz II Men singing "America The Beautiful." This event also featured the WrestleMania debuts of various superstars like Michael Cole, Teddy Long as a referee, Al Snow,...

Casablanca / The African Queen [Blu-ray]

Wrong Info on Back of Disk
I pre-ordered this 2 months ago and just got it today(3/12).

They have the picture of the 70th anniversary edition of Casablanca on the case but according to the details on back it is NOT! It is the old 2008 Blu-Ray release with inferior picture and sound! Luckily this info is wrong and it is really the latest and greatest that has the 4K transfer yielding much better picture quality and a DTS-HD Master Audio track for better sound.

Great blu ray value for two great films
Before buying, I wanted to be sure that the 'Casablanca' transfer was the newer, far superior one, and according to reviews, it is. The two-disc package arrived quickly, and the discs play great.

Great movie! Great Quality!
I may be a younger viewer of the classic films (age 25) but I really enjoy these films. They have very good story lines, acting, and directing as well as capturing the audience. I added these into my collection so that I may share them with my future kids to enjoy and see what real film making used to be. True, it may take longer to develop the plot, but the plot is solid and well worth the wait.

Longest Yard

The Mean Machine is meaner than ever
Robert Aldrich's greatest gift as a film director was his ability to show bad boys and nonconformists in such a sympathetic light. "The Longest Yard" features Reynolds before he traded on his bad boyish charm in all his film roles. Paul Crewe (Burt Reynolds) is a former bad boy football player who ends up in prison for "stealing" his girlfriend's car. His life has fallen apart since he was banned from the game for shaving points.Crewe is pressured by the Warden (Eddie Albert)to coach the guards' semi-pro team to earn a national title. When he refuses (out of preservation for his own skin) Crewe must lead the team of prisoners (called "The Mean Machine") against the guards in an exhibition game where the prisoners are expected to lose. Crewe has a couple of surprises in store for the Warden. The good news about this remake is that it prompted the studio to re-release this classic film. I have no idea if the remake is any good as of yet but we do have the classic original in top...

Where's "Saturday Night Special?"
First off, I love the original film "The Longest Yard." However, as some of you have already pointed out, this "Special Home Video Version" has been tampered with to the point of ruining the film for long-time fans. As already pointed out, the closing song "You Gotta Be a Football Hero" had been changed to "When The Saints Go Marching In," and a scene with Crewe and the Warden has been deleted. That's bad news! What I don't think anyone has mentioned is that the song "Saturday Night Special" was playing in the original film when Paul Crewe has the car chase with the police, then dumps his car into the bay. This song was cut out of the lousy, worthless "Home Video Version." Sorry I can't be more positive. But this film should either be restored or discontinued to save people from throwing away their money.

Dear Paramount....please restore this film!

"Mean Machine! Mean Machine! Mean Machine!"
In the 1970's, there was a small genre of movies, that the studios released, that could best be termed, football comedies. These were a series of films that sort of aped the spirit of Jim Bouton's best selling baseball book, "Ball Four" about the rowdy and scatalogical antics of modern day pro-athletes. Most movie fans consider three films to be the best of this genre. They include "North Dallas Fourty", "Semi-Tough" and of course "The Longest Yard". When it comes to "North Dallas Fourty", I have to be truthful and admit that I've never seen it. I really can't make an informed opinion about it. But,"Semi-Tough really is a very funny film comedy. But let's face it...it's not really about football. It's more of a satire of the 'self-help/feel good' movements (such as E.S.T.) that were all the rage in the 1970's. That leaves, what I like to think of as the gold standard of football movie comedies, "The Longest Yard". This hilarious film is basically M*A*S*H* on steroids. A group of...

WWE: WrestleMania V

The Mega Powers Explode
A couple of notes here in that this is the exact same version of this event taken from the WrestleMania Anthology set meaning that all references to "WWF" & various music has been changed to due the rights expiring but there is no blurring of the WWF logo since this event happened before the "Attitude Era."

This marked the first time ever that a WrestleMania was held in the same venue back to back as it returned to Trump Plaza in Atlantic City once again as Run-DMC performed their "WrestleMania Rap" while this was the WrestleMania debuts of Big Boss Man, Mr. Perfect, Owen Hart as the Blue Blazer, Ronnie Garvin, Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson, Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels.

"The Mega Powers" explode was the name given to the event based off the main event a year in the making as the former partners now enemies faced off in WWE Champion Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan with their manager Ms. Elizabeth in a neutral corner but was a distraction to both men throughout...

Great DVD
Brings back so many memories of when wrestling was worth watching! Reminded me of the good old days, watching quality PPV's with family&friends!

Will Be Much Better If You Enjoy Tag Team Action
After the explosion of an event that was Wrestlemania IV, this fifth installment would have been hard-pressed to live up to expectations. It doesn't, of course, but still manages to turn in a decent showing.

Some of the highlights of Wrestlemania V include:

-A great tag match featuring Demolition vs. The Warlords (what a power display!)
-The Hart Foundation finally getting a big "babyface" response instead of being "heels".
-Jake "The Snake Roberts" pulling out Damien on Andre The Giant (I've never seen the big guy move so fast).
-Seeing Bobby "The Brain" Heenan getting bounced around the ring a little bit (!).
-The debut of Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig, as well as the Ultimate Warrior finally becoming a huge force in the industry.

Of course, the Hulk Hogan vs. Randy "Macho Man" Savage main event is the most entertaining match of the night. Savage was always such a great wrestling personality and showman that his big build-up matches...

Down and Dirty with Jim Norton

Misleading Title
I purchased Down and Dirty with Jim Norton thinking it was going to be stand-up with Jim Norton. This DVD is hosted by Jim Norton, but is 4 - 30 minute episodes of stand-up by other comedians. Each episode you see less than 5 minutes of Jim telling jokes, so I was pretty disappointed. If you are an avid collector of Jim Norton stuff, I would say buy this DVD. But if you are looking for some true stand-up of Jim Norton I would say buy his other DVD, "Monster Rain" instead.

Good if your a fan
Ive been an o and a fan for about 10 years and love Jimmys comedy. This dvd isnt just Lil Jimmy doin comedy but a bunch of other comedians too. The majority of the comedians on here are funny but theres a couple of stinkers. My personal favs are Lil Jimmy, Patrice ONeal, Sean Rouse, Artie Lange and Bill Burr.

Best DVD I have for a laugh
First of, I am a HUGE fan of Jim Norton; he is to me what comedy should be - not PC, not afraid to insult, raw and truthful.

The selection of comedians he presented on the HBO series opened my eyes to a few I never heard of and made me love more so those I already did.

Andrew Dice Clay was OK, It was a little sad to see him as some of the magic was gone - but he is still Dice and still funny.

Artie Lang was really good, while Bill Bur and Patrice just killed it.

Bleach Uncut Set 16

Best filler arc
This arc is the zanpakuto rebellion and is a great arc, while its annoying to get the main story interrupted, this arc is by far the most interesting filler arc as we get to flesh out the zanpakuto and give them faces"

More Filler, But Not Too Bad
Chaos erupts in The Soul Society as Zanpakutou separate from their masters. They are led by a man named Muromasa. Now the Soul Reapers have to battle the human form of their weapons and make them submit. The disappearance of Captains Zaraki, Kuchiki, and Yamamoto have left The Soul Society weakened severely. Not to mention the defection of Aizen's group. Ichigo joins the fight to help restore order.

Just when the story was getting good, we get more filler. Bleach is the worst series in anime history for doing this. It wouldn't be as bad if these arcs came in-between major battles as opposed to right in the middle of them. As much as I want to hate this arc for interrupting the action, I can't. I really am enjoying this arc. Its better than the Bount and Rurichiyo arc. There are some people out there that don't like this part, but so far I like it. I wish they had chosen a better place to put it, but there's nothing we can do about it. May as well enjoy it.

Bleach Vol. 16 - Widescreen
Bleach Uncut Sets 11-15 are only available in fullscreen here in the US. Almost half the screen is cropped out on any given episode, so calling it "Uncut" seems a bit dishonest

Uncut Vol 16 will be the first Bleach DVD in widescreen format (not counting movies)

According to various listings on Amazon, iTunes and Viz Media, I've made a chart comparing the stats of different Bleach TV releases in the US.

Volumes 01-10 :: Native Fullscreen :: DVD only
Volumes 11-15 :: Cropped Fullscreen :: DVD only
Volumes 16-END :: Native Widescreen :: DVD only

Edit:
All episodes of Bleach TV are made in 480p, meaning no blu rays.

While the episode content itself may be "uncut", my understanding is that the ending animations are replaced with slideshow credits.

The Flat

Good but awkward
It was promoted kind of like a great mystery, but I did not feel there was much of one revealed. I found it very awkward when Mr. Goldfinger pursued finding more information on the German woman's father. I guess I felt that was her journey to explore if she so chose, not his to impose upon her. But it was still a fine documentary with an interesting perspective. I especially enjoyed his mother's reaction to his research and interest in the topic. There were a few interviews that were quite good and touching.

Israeli documentarian's fascinating investigation of his own German Jewish grandparents' link to high Nazi official
*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Imagine that your grandmother has just passed away and your family is cleaning out her apartment. Amidst all the stuff your grandmother has collected, you find a tantalizing and shocking newspaper article involving your grandparents that you never heard about before from any other family member including your mother. This is essentially the set-up for 'The Flat', a fascinating new documentary by Israeli filmmaker Arnon Goldfinger.

Goldfinger's grandparents, Gerda and Kurt Tuchler, were German Jews who emigrated to Palestine (now Israel) in 1936 after the Nazis forced them out. The article was from a virulent Nazi newspaper, Der Angriff, from 1934, which chronicles a trip made by a high Nazi official, Leopold von Mildenstein, to Palestine. The article features photos of Mildenstein traveling to Palestine with Goldfinger's grandparents.

The mystery is not only why this SS man would go to Palestine with two Jews...

Intriguing Story
Contains a spoiler!

I watched this fascinating film last night on my Kindle. I was unsure for most of the film if it were a documentary or an actual work of fiction disguised as a documentary. Anyway the story is a gripping real life mystery and Mr. Goldfinger is unrelenting in discovering the past lives of his Grandparents and their unusual relationship with the Mildensteins in Germany.

His Grandparents never fully acclimatized to life in Israel. They never bothered to learn Hebrew and continued to identify themselves as Germans. This was confirmed by the contents of the flat. Therefore the relationship with the Mildensteins (for me anyway) was a continuation of this desire. They completely overlooked his Nazi activities in an effort to remain in touch with a way of former way of life albeit through rose tinted spectacles.

It was very apparent Mr. Goldfinger's Mother was very reticent to speak of her parents past and appeared to know more than she...

Storage 24

Worth the look!
This is probably *not* going to get the kind of release that plops it into the multiplex nearest your home; lucky you if it does! It's a forgone conclusion that it wasn't going to be playing here on many screens, for very long, and for some time yet; so we popped for it, having a good home theater.

The movie itself is earnest and very well done, almost as if the filmmakers watched SUPER 8 and said, "Well, that was fun....but let's do one and not muck around with the focus of the story or its tone". Then they got a small budget, a "bottle" location, a good DP (really helps in this sort of production)....and tried very, very hard to invoke the tone of early John Carpenter movies, even down to some of the scoring. Mostly they succeed. There's no reinventing the wheel here, and it doesn't have the bats*** crazy energy of ATTACK THE BLOCK; but it wasn't trying to be that film. Other than some third-act inconsistencies and dialogue-as-exposition, it is a very good movie that...

B-movie-style fun from Noel Clarke and company
(My review originally appeared on ReelFilmNews.com.)

What do you get when you cross Die Hard with Aliens and Shaun of the Dead? Storage 24, a new sci-fi/horror film from the mind of co-writer and star Noel Clarke, promises to be exactly that. Terse and to the point, Storage 24 is an unpretentious modern horror film that doesn't have to rely on pop culture references or jokey sight gags to get its message across. Instead, the film relies on claustrophobia and fear to provide a thick, heady atmosphere of nonstop tension.
Oh, and an enormous, toothsome alien, too.

As with other great low-budget horror films, Storage 24 manages to look like a movie with ten times its bankroll; the special effects are simple and realistic, relying on the cast to sell it, which they do very well. It's an easy premise: a menacing alien threatens the lives of several people trapped inside a storage facility. Of course, there's the requisite love gone bad between Charlie (Clarke) and...

Alien in a storage locker
This low budget British horror flick has been sitting in my DVR for a couple months now and I finally got around to checking it out. Filmed for all but a few seconds inside a 24 hour storage facility in the outskirts of London, the film borrows from many earlier ones and manages to create some suspense here and there.

Shocked by a loud explosion, later determined to be a plane crash near the facility, the electricity becomes erratic eventually locking a handful inside the storage building. When things start to go bump in the night, we start the countdown to grueling deaths, one by one. Evidently the plane that crashed was a military cargo plane carrying some top secret containers. Using their ingenuity and a few "weapons" they find inside the individual storage units, the little group must go to battle with an unknown enemy. Pretty corny and not terribly scary but not that bad either.

An Excellent look into hockey of the 80's
Being a fan of the game back in the 80's, I had seen a lot of the highlights in this documentary as they actually happened. This DVD chronicles one player in particular Chris Nilan, his ups and downs before, during and after the game of hockey. I remember vividly the Montreal- Boston brawl that spilled out into the hallway, because I remember watching this happen on TV. This and other events during the careers of the now-defunct everyday NHL fighter are told in this delightful DVD. It helps a lot if you were actually able to see these events occur like I did. And I also was able to watch the players interviewed play in their hey-day. That will enhance your enjoyment of this DVD. This DVD is a look into the days of when hockey wasn't controlled by Television and the ol'e mighty dollar. When just about everything was let go as far as the rough stuff. It also dwells into the hardships of the fighters as they play their role's on their teams. So if you were able to see the old-style in...

Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Cinema

A Personal and Concise Introduction to Experimental Film
A concise introduction to a complicated and influential genre of cinema.

From the technique of creating art on film to the business itself, there's something in this documentary for every level of interest.

I've seen my share of experimental films. This documentary introduces the genre while adding something fresh for those already familiar with it.
By no means will you see everything there is to see in experimental film. Nor will you get a complete education from it.
Experimental film tends to catch people differently. People either fall in love with it or turn away and stick with mainstream story-telling.
This documentary gives you the option without making you feel trapped by the awkwardness that is the very nature of avant-garde cinema.
Use it as an introduction to the genre for your students or add it to your library and celebrate the very personal interviews it contains.

You've Been Trumped

Taking On Trump: A Rousing True Life David Versus Goliath Story
In the vein of a true David versus Goliath story, the new documentary "You've Been Trumped" takes a fresh look at just what constitutes progress in the modern world. In an era where the conspicuously wealthy have been anointed the new aristocracy, what happens when ordinary citizens dare to take a stand against the profit machine? That's just what Anthony Baxter's entertaining film examines. In a case that became an international news story, local Scottish residents put everything on the line to try to prevent Donald Trump from destroying their countryside with a luxury golfing resort. And if ever a piece needed a good villain, Trump more than fills the bill. If I told you that Trump comes out in a very unflattering light, would that surprise you? While oftentimes Trump amuses me on a personal level, his greed and hubris certainly epitomize the skewed priorities that can't help but alienate the classes and perpetuate an economic divide. And where exactly do environmental concerns...

A real-life "Local Hero" (the 1983 Scottish film with Burt Lancaster & Peter Riegert)
If you are a fan of reality television (I'm not), you have obviously seen a lot of Billionaire real estate developer Donald Trump and know that he loves to hold whatever control and power he can get over individuals. While not a reality series with a planned plot, this recent wonderful documentary by British documentarian Anthony Baxter is REAL; captured in real time by Baxter (and even some of the local residents in a small community in Scotland - where Trump planned to build the world's largest golf course - when given hand help camcorders by Baxter).
One of my favorite "small films" is "Local Hero", a fictional feature film made in 1983 by Bill Forsythe which revolves around an American oil tycoon (played by Burt Lancaster) who sends his representative (Peter Riegert) to a similar Scottish community to buy up farm land and drill for oil. Baxter draws the parallel but incorporating scenes from "Local Hero" into his 100-minute film. What makes the store in "You've Been Trumped"...

A must watch for our American cousins!
This film has been made in real time by a producer who felt empathy for the people at Trumps mercy, the actions of the vindictive, cold hearted Trump is basically criminal and he is shown to have complete contempt for the people who live in the area he has chosen for his golf course, all they have done is want to preserve the area they live in and keep their homes, but trump has given them 2yrs of misery and destruction.
The part where the filmaker is arrested will leave your mouth wide open, grampian police are way out of line and its all fimed with complete dignity, if all these things were happening to most of us we wouldnt be so calm and dignified as these good people are.
A great film with humor and intrigue into the crazy world of Trump! A must watch for our American cousins, see how Trump conducts himself abroad.

Kumare

Profound teaching wrapped in a social experiment
Watched this last night with my husband who follows his own Eastern guru, so the irony was not lost on either of us. ;-) Part interesting social experiment, part art project, part truth-seeking, from my perspective. I thought it was artfully done and thoughtfully filmed, considering the hoax being perpetrated on some particularly sensitive, spiritually-minded folks. Regardless of the filmmaker's motives, which I'm sure were complex based on his own life experience, and viewpoint as an artist and truth-seeker himself, my take-away was that the positive experience of the participants was no less authentic because their teacher was a "big faker," and his method was made up. All of our rituals and beliefs are made up anyway, and the only real reality is that elusive place beyond language and identity we all know is there inside us, and leaves us at some level feeling like something is missing in our lives if we don't connect with it regularly. (Through a blue light meditation, maybe...

Brilliant! Hilarious! Courageous! Empowering!
OUCH! Having spent the last 15 years immersed in the US yoga scene, this excellent and insightful documentary hits painfully close to home. Vikram delivers a profound and positive message through the use of light-hearted humor and satire. He manages to expose the irony inherent in the guru industry, while endearing the individual seeker to the viewer.

Must Watch!
I was eager to watch Kumare after Ghandi appeared on The Colbert Report in July, but the limited runs of this documentary sent it to the back of my mind until a friend brought it up in conversation as to whether or not I had seen it.

I must admit, as a yoga practioner, I was thoroughly moved and impressed at the insight of Ghandi to even set a plan like this into motion. I think it should be watched by all, not just the more spiritually astute or "walkers of the path". It speaks VOLUMES to how desperate the Western society has become for "enlightenment" that they will attach to anyone/thing.

MUST WATCH!

Key to the City

a great video
"Key to the City," with Clark Gable and Loretta Young is a wonderful and delightful film. It is the story of two Mayor's one played by Clark, Mayor Finch from California and Mayor Standdish from Maine, played wonderfully by Loretta. The two fall in love in th epolitical world, and find out even though they are total opposites in tastes and personalities, they were made for each other. A great romantic, and entertaining film. I highly recomend it. It has a great story-line. It is very entertaining.

Oil & Water Romantic Comedy Has Charm
"Key to the City" is a 1950 romantic comedy starring Clark Gable and Loretta Young in their first and final screen pairing since "The Call of the Wild" (1935). When small-town mayor Steve Fisk (Gable) arrives at a national mayors' convention in San Fancisco, he meets attractive Clarissa Standish (Young), mayor of Winonah, Maine. They are from completely different backgrounds -- she's a Harvard law school grad, he's a roughneck ex-longshoreman -- but they are both honest politicians.

Steve invites Clarissa to dine at a rowdy nightclub, which lands them both in jail. Their arrests make the morning papers, Clarissa finds herself falling for Steve, and she's forced to choose between love and duty when the scandal threatens both of their careers. Co-starring Raymond Burr (TV's Perry Mason), "Key to the City" also marked the final screen appearance of Frank Morgan (the title character in "The Wizard of Oz"). Three years later, Loretta Young would abandon her big-screen...

Now we know as to why Clarke Gable was "King" in his time
An excellent film with humour, a moral story on City Hall corruption and a cast which brings the 'zing' to each one of their roles'. The conversation between the Judge and the Mayor by way of the City Hall exchange though each is in an adjoining booth at the city airport is hilarious. Just one of the clever twists in the tale.
A family film!

Police Story

Finally - the release we've been waiting for!
I first saw Police Story back in 1989 on VHS. I loved it and thought it was a riot. The fight scenes were great and I just couldn't believe the things Jackie Chan would do to put action on the screen. That is what makes his movies so great. You see the action and amazing stunts and you KNOW that is Jackie doing it, not some stunt double and since he's doing it, it's not that unbelievable. Plus, he knows how to be funny on screen and it works so well with everything going on. His fighting style is not some fancy martial arts. Like Jackie says, it's street fighting and unlike other heroes, Jackie gets so beat up and yet he still gets up and makes you cheer for the good guy.

Now, with this DVD release, you get the movie the way it was. The VHS was at 90 minutes. This version is at 101 minutes which means there were some added scenes which I can't remember for the life of me. It's been so long since I saw the VHS version that I don't know what scenes were put back in...

great action and humor you'd expect from classic Chan
Finally its on dvd, and long overdue - one of the best Jackie Chan movies ever made. Police Story is classic Chan at its best, including terrific action and great Chan humor. Jackie Chan plays "Kevin Chan", and is a one man army in this action blast.

After capturing a criminal drug lord in an explosive action-packed beginning sequence, the movie only begins to take off, as Chan constantly fights off goon after goon wherever he goes to protect a witness to the criminal. The drug lord only frames Chan for killing another cop, result, Chan becomes one angry and determined man to take matters on his own hands to capture the guy once and for all, who had escaped his first capture swiftly thanks to his ridiculous lawyer at the hearing.

The action is constant from beginning to end, and where there isn't Chan fighting and action, there is the comedy and humor, resulting in great pacing overall. The real treat of Poilce Story is the final fight in the shopping mall,...

Police Story(1985)
Jackie Chan worked on the violent action movie The Protector in 1985. The film was a critical and commercial flop. Chan did not get along with director James Glickenhaus. In Hong Kong, Chan re-edited and re-shot scenes for the Hong Kong version of The Protector, but the movie was still a failure. Chan took matters into his own hands by directing and starring in Police Story(1985). He plays Chan Ka Kui. In the English dubbed versions, he's known as "Kevin Chan" in the UK English dub and "Jackie Chan" in the US New Line Cinema version released on VHS. Chan plays a Hong Kong police officer who tries to put crooked businessman Tom Koo/Chu To(Chor Yuen) in jail. Chu To frames Officer Chan for murder and he must find a way to prove that he's innocent. A young Maggie Cheung plays Chan's on screen girlfriend May. In Hong Kong, Police Story is known as Ging Chat Goo Si. The HK version is longer than the US cut and the Japanese version has more key scenes.

Dimension Extreme 6-Film Collection (Black Sheep, Automaton, Broken, Rogue, Welcome to the Jungle, 13)

A mixed bloody bag
My mom got this for me. I think it's worth a buy for horror fans as it has acouple desired films in one set, but all the films that I watched are slow and indecisive. Below is a list for each film that I watched and thoughts on one's I didn't finish.

13: Game of Death /or 13 Beloved- This Thai film is extremely suspenceful. A guy down on his luck is offered 100 million if he completes 13 challenges for an underground game show. If he quits, fails, or is found by the police in one of the challenges, the game is over and all money he has one will be dropped. And each act is becoming more degrading and the police is on his trail... Krissada Sukosol Clapp does a great job as the main character: When your not worried about him commiting an act that brings the tension but more what will be next or if he'll finish of his last task. Some parts had me talking at the screen and I got so mad at one character near the end that I wanted him to die, something I rarely ever do in a movie...

Borgen - Season 1

An Acclaimed Danish Political Drama Finally Gets A North American DVD Distribution
I first became aware of the Danish political drama "Borgen" when Stephen King listed it as the best TV program he had watched in 2012 in a year end edition of Entertainment Weekly. This caused me to seek out the show which has actually aired in a few major U.S. markets. Until now, though, it hasn't had an official North American DVD distribution deal. This four disc set has all ten episodes of Season One which debuted in Denmark in 2010 (the show is currently airing Season Three over there). In 2012, "Borgen" won a BAFTA as Best International TV Series. In a finely honed balance of the personal and the political, "Borgen" is grounded by an extraordinary leading performance by Sidse Babett Knudsen as Denmark's first female Prime Minister. You can draw certain comparisons to the "West Wing" for the juggling of an immense cast and rapid fire storylines or even to Geena Davis' short lived "Commander in Chief" for its depiction of a female...

BORGEN Captivates Audiences With Stellar Political Performances
I just experienced a marathon: I just watched an entire season of a television show I was entirely unfamiliar with from the get-go. If you're wondering, it's an import. It hails from Denmark. It's called BORGEN, and it was the winner for the "Best International TV Series" at the 2012 BAFTA Awards. For the record, I normally don't do this. I don't normally run-off an entire program in a single sitting. Like fine wine, I like my television dramas to breathe a little, so I'll usually sip them a few episodes at a time, allowing the experience to sink in a bit, to intoxicate me fully (or not, if it's an inferior wine), to give me something to think about and mull over while I'll looking for something to help wash it down. The problem I had with BORGEN was that - for reasons that I'll try to make perfectly clear by the end of this review - I simply couldn't look away.

Yes, it was THAT captivating.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary...

Outstanding Political Thriller!
I am so happy that "Borgen" has been released in Region 1 NTSC. I first read about it in in the UK Guardian. Season one of this ten-episode series, which is distributed on four disks, introduces the characters and plot. It therefore might seem a bit slow, and even confusing, if one is not familiar with the dynamics of a coalition government, but do persist. By episode two you ought to be thoroughly hooked (I watched six episodes in one sitting, and the other four the next evening). The series is so good that I want to go back and watch it again and pick up the details that I missed the first time around.

Sidse Babett Knudsen plays Birgitte Nyborg, who rises from political obscurity to become head of her political party. When the voters (in an idealistic scenario) recognise her sincerity and reject the political shenanigans of the conservative Prime Minister and the leader of the Labour Party, Birgitte's Moderate party receives a majority of votes. The Queen therefore asks...

Ip Man The Legend is Born

A necessary installment
For people who don't know, "IP MAN 3" really isn't "IP MAN 3". The real name is "IP MAN: THE LEGEND IS BORN". It does not star Donnie Yen, and was made by a different production company, but shares much of the same cast. It also is basically a PREQUEL to the other two movies. It is necessary to understand the origins and early life of IP MAN. If you are a casual viewer, you probably won't like it as much as the other two movies. However, if you really got into the story, you need to see this movie. This is a great DVD. Fantastic picture and some great special features.

Great Movie
I finally found this DVD, after first buying another version that was
horrible. I'm a huge IP MAN fan and really enjoyed it. If you haven't seen
any IP MAN movie, you should watch this one first, than IP MAN 1 and IP MAN
2 since this movie serves as a prequel.

Great movie, Great DVD
While Donnie Yen fans might be disappointed with this movie, IP MAN
and action fans in general will be satisfied. This movie is a prequel
to the other two and was made by a different company. It traces the
early part of Ip's life not covered in the other two films. This DVD
is terrific with a great picture and lots of extras.

Bodyguards and Assassins

excellent movie but not in cantonese
I love this movie. This is as good as Ip Man and better than Ip Man 2. The only minus is that I thought this DVD can play both cantonese and mandarin, but found out that it can only play in mandarin.

An Epic Film
This is a great movie. It has a good pseudo-historical story about Sun Yat-Sen visiting Hong Kong in 1906 to plan a revolution against the empress and the government of China. The empress when she learns of the visit dispatches a small army of ninjas to assassinate him. The first hour of the film introduces the location, the very diverse characters and the story. The second hour is non-stop action as Sun arrives, the ninjas and their fearsome leader attempt to kill him, and the motley group of characters we've been introduced to attempt to thwart them and save Sun. There's a lot of heroism and loyalty on display here, and some unforgettable fight scenes. The one that pits Donnie Yen against the ninja champion is probably the most thrilling because he has the skills but the others are powerful, too. In every respect this movie is exceptional, the direction, the acting, the cinematography, the set creation, and the scoring. It's a classic.

Spectacular cast and atmosphere, action is kind of secondary
Whenever I find myself getting lost in conversations with other people about martial arts films one of the guys that always seems to get glossed over is Donnie Yen. He's just as good as the Bruce Lees, the Jackie Chans, the Jet Lis, and Tony Jaas out there, but for some reason he's just never really been able to click with the mainstream. Yen seemed to stick around wuxia films longer than the names you probably associate with these types of movies and extravagant wirework is usually the first thing to make an action film feel mediocre to me. People can't fly around, run on the tips of blades of grass, or kick people seventeen times in the air before landing on their feet and doing it all over again; the more realistic an action film is the more enjoyable it is to me. But ever since Hero (yes it's a wuxia film, but it's one of the exceptions), Donnie Yen has put out some really fantastic action films that are either more grounded or the wirework involved is a lot more subtle. Kill Zone...
